Initiatives that take flight

We are working on five pioneering investment projects that harmoniously articulate production needs with ecosystems’ conservation and well-being, and inhabitants’ well-being.

Projects funded through AFI will provide identified and measurable co-benefits linked to ecosystem services, economic development, and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Birdlife - Infraestructura verde segura para aves – Ruta migratoria

Chile

Valuation of natural capital.

Project category:

Nature-based solution.

Birds:

168 bird species (eBird).

Threat:

Multiple anthropogenic threats (road development, urban development, canalization, monocultures, agriculture and livestock), mainly the increase in urban development (28% in 10 years and a projection of 238% according to current planning instruments (Rojas et al., 2022).

Birdlife - Infraestructura verde segura para aves – Ruta migratoria

Ecuador

Landscape restoration project of montane forests and aquatic ecosystems in the northwestern Andes of Ecuador.

Site:

The Choco-Andean mountain forests of Pichincha and Imbabura.

Importance:

The Andean Chocó is a biogeographical region that represents the transition between two global biodiversity hotspots: the Tropical Andes and Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena. This transition generates high indices of diversity and endemism, with key habitat areas for threatened and vulnerable avifauna species, such as migratory birds, experiencing serious population declines.

Allies:

CONDESAN, Ecuadorian government entities to be defined.

Type of solution:

Restoration of forest on degraded lands and installation of green and gray infrastructure for water treatment.

Intervention status:

Structuring.

Project category:

Nature-based solutions.

Birds:

Migratory species of interest:

Setophaga cerulea Cerulean Warbler, Contopus cooperi Boreal Warbler, Cardellina canadensis Canada Warbler

Resident species of interest:

Cephalopterus penduliger Pájaro Paraguas Longipéndulo, Andigena laminirostris Tucán Andino Piquilaminado, Neomorphus radiolosus Cuco Hormiguero Bandeado, Eriocnemis nigrivestis Zamarrito Pechinegro, Glaucidium nubicola Mochuelo Nuboselvático, Dacnis berlepschi Dacnis Pechiescarlata, Ara ambiguus Guacamayo Verde Mayor, Spizaetus isidori Águila Andina.

Threat:

Deforestation and habitat fragmentation, contamination of rivers and other bodies of water.

Panama

Incorporation of bird-friendly architecture and design elements at CAF’s headquarters in Panama City

Site:

Rocuant Andalién Wetland System.

Importance:

National and international. Marsh, estuarine and riparian wetland system.

Allies:

Costs of Urbanization on the Coast (Urbancost), Nature-Based Infrastructure Global Resource Centre.

Birdlife - Infraestructura verde segura para aves – Ruta migratoria

Canada

In conjunction with our partner, Birds Canada, we have managed a knowledge exchange project with Metro Vancouver on Lona Island, British Columbia.

Description:

The focus is on learning about the mechanisms implemented in the comprehensive design of the modern wastewater treatment plant on Iona Island in the Fraser River to improve water quality, restore estuarine health, and generate essential habitat for migratory birds.

This is AFI’s first nest project focused on knowledge management, with the goal of making visible, sharing, and replicating best practices that link communities, birds, and nature.

Importance:

National and international. Marsh, estuarine and riparian wetland system.

Allies:

Costs of Urbanization on the Coast (Urbancost), Nature-Based Infrastructure Global Resource Centre.

Type of solution:

Wetland restoration. Recovery of the ecosystem service of flood regulation and biodiversity.
