Initiatives that take flight
We are working on five initial investment projects that harmoniously articulate productive needs with the conservation and well-being of ecosystems and their inhabitants.
Projects funded through AFI will provide identified and measurable co-benefits linked to ecosystem services, economic development, and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Chile
Improving coastal climate resilience
Site:
Rocuant Andalién Wetland System.
Importance:
National and international. Marsh, estuarine and riparian wetland system.
Allies:
Costs of Urbanization on the Coast (Urbancost), Nature-Based Infrastructure Global Resource Centre.
Type of solution:
Wetland restoration. Recovery of the ecosystem service of flood regulation and biodiversity.
Intervention status:
Valuation of natural capital.
Project category:
Nature-based solution.
Birds:
168 bird species (eBird)
Threat:
Multiple anthropogenic threats (road development, urban development, canalization, monocultures, agriculture and livestock), mainly the increase in urban development (28% in 10 years and a projection of 238% according to current planning instruments (Rojas et al., 2022).

Ecuador
Integration of bird-friendly practices in power transmission and distribution lines serving the Ecuadorian shrimp industry
Site:
Gulf of Guayaquil and its surroundings
Importance:
National and international. Mangroves, intertidal mudflats, dry forest remnants.
Allies:
Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador.
Type of solution:
incorporation of best practices to avoid/mitigate impacts on the bird community.
Intervention status:
Preparing environmental impact studies.
Project category:
bird-friendly and bird-safe infrastructure.
Birds:
Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) Semipalmated Plover (Charadrius semipalmatus) and Semipalmated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla), important concentrations of Anas bahamensis, Nyctanassa violacea, and Charadrius semipalmatus as well as an important congregation of Red-lored Plover (Charadrius semipalmatus) and a significant congregation of Red-lored Sandpiper (Calidris semipalmatus). semipalmatus as well as an important congregation of Red-lored Amazon Amazon (Amazona autumnalis) and the presence of the critically endangered Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus).
Threat:
Collision or electrocution of birds on overhead power lines.
Ecuador
Landscape restoration project of montane forests and aquatic ecosystems in the northwestern Andes of Ecuador.
Site:
the Choco-Andean Mountain Forests of pichincha and imbabura
Importance:
The Andean Chocó is defined as a biogeographical region that represents the transition between two global biodiversity hotspots: Tropical Andes and Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena. This transition generates high indices of diversity and endemism, with key habitat areas for threatened and vulnerable avifauna species experiencing serious population declines, such as migratory birds.
Allies:
CONDESAN, Ecuadorian government entities to be defined.
Type of solution:
Restoration of forest on degraded lands and installation of green and gray infrastructure for water treatment.
Intervention status:
Structuring
Project category:
Nature-based solutions.
Birds:
Migratory species of interest:
Setophaga cerulea Cerulean Warbler, Contopus cooperi Boreal Pygmy, Cardellina canadensis Canada warbler
Resident species of interest:
Cephalopterus penduliger Long-tailed Umbrella Bird, Andigena laminirostris Andean Pied Toucan, Neomorphus radiolosus Banded Antbird Cuckoo, Eriocnemis nigrivestis Black-chested Curassow, Glaucidium nubicola Nuboselvatic Owl, Dacnis berlepschi Dacnis Pechiescarlata, Ara ambiguus Greater Green Macaw , Spizaetus isidori Andean Eagle.
Threat:
Deforestation and habitat fragmentation, contamination of rivers and other bodies of water.
