What projects are we looking to support?
They are actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural and modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously benefiting people and nature. (IUCN, 2016).
Indigenous peoples and local communities have been applying them for centuries. Now, we will work with them to expand them across borders.
Type of projects:
- Ecosystem restoration, conservation, and protection.
- Sustainable and bird-friendly agriculture and aquaculture.
- Coastal management to promote climate resilience.
They are constructions compatible with the physical and behavioural needs of birds. For example, sufficient space to fly and perch, to serve as a refuge from the weather and predators, comfortable ventilation and lighting, or to provide food and water.
Building with nature protects its natural capital.
Type of projects:
- Water security (access to safe water, sanitation, and irrigation).
- Infrastructure for the generation of clean energy.
- Integrated solid waste management.
- Linear infrastructure: urban and rural roads, power distribution lines, pipelines, towers, telecommunications lines.
- Urban infrastructure: buildings, educational/health facilities, etc.
- Sustainable agriculture, livestock, fishing and aquaculture.

An opportunity to reconnect with nature
More than half of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends to a high or moderate degree on nature’s resources and services: clean water and air, fertile soil, food, medicines, raw materials, and more. In this sense, the loss or destruction of nature harms the global economy.
Countries that are part of AFI will be able to respond comprehensively to the development, conservation, and climate resilience needs of their territories and thus to:
Birds connect us across borders and sectors
Nature has no borders, and birds prove it with their epic journeys of thousands of kilometers that link territories of life.
Inspired by the magic of their migration, we will integrate landscapes, cultures, and people from the Tundra to Tierra del Fuego.
Our initiative is an opportunity for synergy, integration, collaboration and harmonious coexistence to unite people and nature beyond geographical, and sectoral boundaries.
